Dr. Georgios Kotsakis, DDS, MS, is a Board-Certified Periodontist and implant surgeon. He completed his residency training in periodontics at the University of Minnesota, and has since held academic appointments as Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and as Associate Professor and Roland Meffert Endowed Professor at UT Health San Antonio. He currently serves as Professor of Oral Biology and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of both the International Team for Implantology and the International College of Dentists. His work has been recognized by the American Academy of Periodontology, the Academy of Periodontology Foundation, and the International Association for Dental Research — including the AAP’s Clinical Research Award and the Sigmund Socransky Award, one of the highest honors in dental research.

Dr. Kotsakis is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. He has been invited to lecture and lead surgical courses across North America, Europe, and Asia. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Periodontology — the official journal of the American Academy of Periodontology — and for Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, and sits on the editorial boards of other leading implantology journals. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, including original surgical protocols for managing peri-implantitis, and has authored chapters in major periodontology textbooks including Newman and Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology.

Clinically, he specializes in the surgical management of peri-implantitis and complex implant complications, with particular expertise in advanced bone and soft tissue regeneration — rebuilding the foundation an implant needs when that foundation has been lost.
