What exactly are full-arch Implants or the All-on-4 procedure?

If you are missing more than one tooth, then you may have considered options like a dental bridge or dentures. Those can both be powerful solutions, but a new option is revolutionizing restorative dentistry. Known as the All-on-4 Treatment Concept, it is one of Full Implant Choice™’s best options for patients looking for a fast, effective, and hassle-free treatment.

“All on 4” and “Teeth in a Day” are terms used to describe a procedure that allows patients to receive replacement teeth in just one day. You may hear of other versions of this procedure such as “Teeth in an Hour,“ “Dental Implants in One Day,“ “Teeth In One Day,“ “Teeth In One Visit.” While they go by many names, all refer to a one-day implant treatment, which restores a full arch of replacement teeth.

What is the All-on-4 Treatment Concept?

Now, thanks to the All-on-4 Treatment Concept, dental implants are being used to replace more than one missing tooth. Instead of replacing each tooth with an individual implant, the All-on-4 utilizes arches supported by only four implants. The All-on-4 Treatment Concept utilizes four dental implants to attach your new set of permanent replacement teeth in a minimally invasive way. The dental implants used in this procedure are specially designed for immediate function and typically do not require bone grafting. This treatment is attractive for those patients with dentures or in need of full upper and/or lower tooth restorations. If you are about to lose your teeth or have many missing teeth, the All-on-4 procedure can help you achieve a beautiful smile and teeth in just one day.

How the All-on-4 Treatment Concept Can Help You

The All-on-4 Treatment Concept can make a huge difference to your quality of life, whether you have had dentures for years or if you are considering restorative options for the very first time. Many patients that need to replace multiple teeth opt for dentures, but compared to All-on-4 they come with a number of drawbacks. Dentures are supported only by your gums, which not only erodes your gums and jawbone but also makes it easier for them to slide around in your mouth. This limits the foods you can eat and can make talking difficult or awkward.

The All-on-4 Treatment Concept is different. Not only does it replace your missing teeth with new ones that are even stronger and more durable, but it actually helps maintain the long-term health of the rest of your mouth. Dental implants keep your jawbone healthy and stimulated, preventing bone loss that can prematurely age you. Plus, implants are far more durable.

Unlike other approaches that involve more laborious and costly techniques often requiring bone grafting, sinus lifts, and eight or more implants per arch, which can take up to three years to complete treatment, Dr. Hogan uses this proven technique of the All-on-4 Treatment Concept that involves only using four specially placed implants without the need for bone grafts and sinus lifts. Your new dentures can be completed in just one day.

The end result is a solid base of teeth that are fixed in place and are not removed. It means lower costs and reduced healing times allowing our patients to regain their original youthful smile and original function faster, more reliably. The All-on-4 technique is FDA approved and has a long history of success.

What to Expect During the All-on-4 Treatment

Every All-on-4 treatment is different because every patient is different. For some patients it will require follow-up visits to our office so we can monitor the development of the implant bonding process, while other patients will only need to come in for a single visit. Before we actually place the dental implants, one of our skilled oral surgeons will go over the process with you, performing an exam and taking scans so that we have a complete idea of what your mouth and the surrounding structures look like. Using this high-resolution data, Dr. Hogan will delicately place the implants within your jawbone. Some patients might need to have remaining unhealthy teeth extracted first to make room for the replacement teeth. Others might need a bone graft to give their jaws sufficient bone mass to support the implants, however this is rare with the All-on-4 Treatment Concept.

What is the process for getting “All on 4” and “Teeth in a Day” Implants?

Four appliances are placed into the jawbone and gums and left to heal sufficiently before the implant bridge can be secured in place. Once implanted, the bridge will never need to be removed and will resemble the appearance of your natural teeth.

As with all Dental Implants, All-on-4 Dental Implants are placed during an outpatient surgical procedure in Dr. Hogan's office. Most patients will want to take advantage of some sort of sedation for this procedure, in addition to the local anesthetic that will be used.

Before leaving Dr.Hogan's office, you are fitted with the prosthetic arch – a fixed complete denture. After the implants have fully integrated with the bone, you may return to receive a second, stronger denture.

What are the Benefits of the All-on-4 Procedure?

In addition to the short treatment time frame, All-on-4 Dental Implants have a number of advantages over conventional dentures:You have new teeth in as little as just one day

  • It’s a minimally invasive procedure
  • There’s less pain and swelling
  • No more ill-fitting dentures
  • It eliminates denture adhesives
  • Your new teeth are secure like your natural teeth
  • Fewer dental visits are required
  • It’s cost-effective compared to traditional implants
  • It is a life-changing procedure

Who is a good candidate for full-arch Implants?

Dental implants are widely regarded as a good treatment for loose dentures. Permanent dental implants are designed to make dentures much more secure and enable you to smile, eat and talk confidently. We can assist you if you have been thinking about investing in implants. The implants act as a foundation for replacement teeth. They won’t decay and are designed to last for the rest of your life. Implants can be used in conjunction with various dental procedures to improve oral health. Once they are installed, you’re much less likely to face problems with slippage and discomfort.

Are There Any Reasons Why an All-on-4 Would Be Unsuitable?

Bone Loss

Bone loss in the jaw is often a problem for the placement of dental implants. There are several reasons why the bone may be compromised—including degeneration caused by severe periodontitis (advanced gum disease) and resorption of the bone around the tooth socket of a lost tooth during the healing process. A dental implant requires enough bone to surround the implant so the process of osseointegration (when the bone and implant fuse together) can take place successfully.

Smoking

Cigarette smoking has a detrimental effect on blood flow, which is critical in delivering oxygen and nutrients around the body. This is particularly relevant just after dental implants have been placed, where the healing and infection-fighting processes can be greatly diminished by any decrease in blood flow, potentially leading to failure of the implants.

Health

Good general health is another requirement for the All-on-4 procedure. Some medical conditions, including diabetes, or blood clotting problems could be an issue for the viability of any dental implant procedure. These conditions may not exclude you from a dental implant procedure, but your medical condition will need to be demonstrably under control.
